About Us

Meet Dr. Sarah Hulland

Dr. Hulland

Dr. Sarah Hulland was born in Guelph, ON, where she was very active in music, participating in many sports and volunteering with different charities.

As an adult, Dr. Hulland maintains her active lifestyle and still enjoys many of the same activities in addition to caring for her patients. For her, one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a pediatric dentist is the ability to “play”

at work: helping children see that a healthy body and lifestyle will keep them smiling forever!

Dr. Sarah Hulland specializes in dental trauma as well as pediatric patients with special needs and complex medical issues. Many of the children she works with have significantly compromised medical conditions, severe behavior management issues, developmental delays, and autism.

Dr. Hulland is committed to a lifetime of learning. In addition to completing Specialist training in Pediatric Dentistry, she has completed an extra year of training in medically complex and special needs care.  Her ongoing pursuit of continuing dental care ensures each of her patients receives appropriate treatment for their particular interests. Additionally, Dr. Hulland presents educational seminars, participates in research, and has published numerous articles.

Currently, Dr. Hulland teaches at the University of Alberta, lecturing 3rd and 4th-year students in courses on Management of Dental Trauma and Psychology.

administrators

Our dental office administrators generally perform clerical duties, such as handling phone calls and scheduling appointments, as well as dealing with accounts payable and receivable and insurance claims. While they do not directly treat patients, they are essential to our office’s ability to provide the standard of care our patients deserve.

You may see our administration team greeting patients, answering the telephone, and managing our schedule. They are also available to help with collecting insurance data and communicating benefits, verifying patient eligibility and filing completed claims for payment and making financial arrangements, and collecting payments from patients.

The dental assistants at ABC Pediatric Dentistry are part of our integrated healthcare team that provides oral care to patients. They perform a number of duties throughout the day, including collecting patient information, preparing and maintaining dental instruments and equipment, assisting Dr. Hulland’s inpatient care, and preparing dental materials for restorations. A vital aspect of dental assisting involves communication with patients to achieve and maintain optimal oral health as an integral part of well-being.

Our Dental assistants have all successfully completed high school with an emphasis on sciences including biology and chemistry. Dental assistant programs provide training in areas including microbiology and infection control, preventive dentistry, dental radiography, clinical assisting procedures, and community dental health. In addition, all of our Dental Assistants maintain a valid CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Level C certificate.

Registered Dental Hygienist

Our dental hygienists are proud to educate and empower Canadians to embrace their oral health for better overall health and well-being. They specialize in the promotion of oral health and prevention of oral disease, working alongside Dr. Hulland to provide high-quality oral healthcare. Dental hygienists are also highly educated and capable of planning and implementing oral care strategies while offering motivation and good communication to build trusting relationships.

In addition to earning a diploma or bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from a college or university accredited by The Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada, practicing dental hygienists must be registered with the dental hygiene regulatory authority in their province or territory. Once registered and practicing, most provinces and territories require dental hygienists to successfully complete a number of professional development initiatives each year.

Myofunctional Therapists

Dr. Hulland collaborates with myofunctional therapists to treat Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs), which include disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. OMDs may affect breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth, and development, chewing, swallowing, speech, occlusion, temporomandibular joint movement, oral hygiene, stability of orthodontic treatment, facial aesthetics, and more.

Myofunctional therapists work to:

  • Eliminate bad habits (thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, etc.)
  • Teach nasal cleansing and nasal breathing
  • Provide muscle therapy exercises to stretch, tone, and develop proper function
  • Introduce the proper chewing and swallowing patterns
  • Develop proper head and neck posture

Along with myofunctional therapists, Dr. Hulland allies with professionals such as general dentists, orthodontists, and osteopaths to ensure that her patient’s needs are addressed and handled appropriately. We feel that in order to be successful, treatment needs to be looked at from a variety of approaches.

Office Tour

The ABC Pediatric Dentistry office features a nature and forest animal theme. We use as much natural sunlight as possible. Our office, your family, and each child we serve are part of the natural world and play a unique role in it. We seek to make their oral health an integral focus.
